“Excuse me,”
a voice called out as I was wandering lost in a creepy forest.
Lured by the flickering light, I blend into the darkness.
“Come over here,”
the boy with the mask beckons to me.
“Let’s play together,” he held out his hand,
and I let him guide me along.

We go through a quiet path, and from somewhere in the distance,
I can hear a strange folk song.
Gradually, we get closer and arrive at a mansion. We open the door.

“Welcome. This is the ‘Mansion of the Wise’.”
Come, make a circle and dance.
If you were guided here by “cheerful voices,”
then that’s the key to your heart.

“Eba uu jonca noia
seko yo kurai adoki”—
that queer song goes on endlessly.
“Be it ‘fear’ or ‘anxiety,’ just forget about them all.”
Say bye-bye to them, along with your tears.

After much frolicking, I grew tired and fell asleep.
In my black-and-white dream,
there is a young boy crying,
complaining about all his regrets.

…Suddenly, I wake up. “Where am I?”
I should be at the party hall, and yet…
There’s the sound of footsteps in the darkness.
…Looks like someone has come.

“Let me buy those ‘emotions’ from you,” the old woman said.
“I’ll also give you this mask for free.”
“There’s no need for those ‘painful emotions,’ right?”, the woman smiled eerily.

Forgetting about all pains, being loved by everyone;
a persona that’d allow me to blend in with the world.
I just need to wear this, and everyone would be my friends.
But something doesn’t feel right…

Once I’ve sold off my “unhappiness” and “sadness,”
I end up forgetting about joy, too.
All that’s left is a great “emptiness.”
Who am I? What are you?

When I open the door from which some light is leaking out,
I see the “emotions” and such that were bought off being fed into a system.
All words become spiritualized, and mechanical dolls start rattling and moving about.
Upon straining my eyes to see, what I find there, alas…

Singing ghosts and laughing androids.
O, humans who dance like dolls.
They’ve completely forgotten about “sorrow” and “joy,”
and below their masks, they’re all faceless.

Please return my “emotions” to me.
Destroy that “cheerful act.”
This place is the sleeping island of “emptiness.”
Run away from there right now
before you become a puppet on a string.
